Disbursement

As a rule, the payment of holiday allowance is linked to an individual’s permanent exit from the labour market, e.g. retirement, early retirement, relocation from Denmark, etc. However, it has been possible to receive payment without leaving the labour market on three occasions.

Disbursement in accordance with the original rules

Employees who choose to leave their holiday pay in the Holiday Pay Fund following the early payments may request payment in accordance with the original rules, namely when they leave the labour market. When employees reach retirement age, their holiday pay will be paid out, unless they specifically request that it remain in the Holiday Pay Fund.

In the event of an employee’s death, the holiday allowance will be paid to the estate. In the event of other permanent withdrawal from the labour market, e.g. early retirement, relocation or other circumstances, payment may be requested upon presentation of supporting documentation.

Where an individual employee’s holiday allowance amounts to less than DKK 1,500, it will be paid out immediately.

Early payment, autumn 2020

In order to stimulate the economy following the financial recession caused by the COVID-19 crisis, the option to claim payment of three weeks’ holiday allowance was introduced in autumn 2020. Consequently, employees were able to apply for this payment without leaving the labour market. Of the total DKK 108 billion in the Holiday Allowance Fund, DKK 52.3 billion was paid out to 2.3 million employees.

Early payment, spring 2021

Following the completion of the first early payment in 2020, a political majority decided to allow the remaining holiday allowance to be paid out. The second early payment took place from the end of March 2021 until the end of May 2021. Approximately DKK 36 billion was paid out.

Disbursement in accordance with Section 28

Following the introduction of the freeze on holiday pay, an opportunity arose for new employees who had accrued fewer than 8.4 days’ holiday prior to the freeze to apply for holiday pay upon request.
